Nintendo Switch Exclusive Square Enix RPG Releases Demo

Although the latest iterations of Final Fantasy haven’t been very similar to where the franchise started, Square Enix is still capable of making a classic turn-based JRPG. During today’s Nintendo Direct presentation, the company revealed some big third-party titles arriving on the Switch in the coming year and released new details about the latest Square Enix RPG coming to the console.

The new game was originally announced in January and is operating under the working title Project Octopath Traveler. The RPG puts players in control of eight different characters, each with a unique personality and play style. One of the characters may be good at fighting, while another is good at negotiating, or charisma, etc. The aesthetic will definitely appeal to fans of old school RPGs or games like Bravely Default and the portable nature of the Switch should be a perfect pairing for this kind of title.

Here’s a first look at the game’s reveal trailer…

Although the game doesn’t arrive until 2018, Switch owners are able to download a free demo for the game right now from the Nintendo eShop. We haven’t had a chance to fully explore the demo yet, so we can’t confirm the length of the free experience. Square Enix is apparently looking for feedback before the official launch, so we recommend jumping in and checking things out.

This kind of old school inspired title may not appeal to the average gamer, but JPRGs always do well on the 3DS, so it’s no surprise to see Nintendo trying to capitalize on that market with the Switch, as well. Switch exclusive games have an incredible impressive track record for sales so far, so we look forward to seeing how many units of this one the company will be able to move in 2018.

Project Octopath Traveler releases worldwide for the Nintendo Switch in 2018.
