The Dawning was a winter-themed event that debuted in the third year of Destiny 1, and brought with it the return of Sparrow Racing League and the Ice Breaker exotic sniper rifle, plus added Strike Scoring and more. Bungie says that The Dawning will return again for Destiny 2 but with its own set of content and events.
During a TwitchCon panel about the seasons of Destiny 2, Bungie’s Ryan Paradis said that many fans asked why they couldn’t have snowball fights in the Tower back when the event was active in Destiny 1. Paradis says that now players will be able to have snowball fights in the game’s social spaces, which look to be about the size of the orb relics located throughout the game.
He also said players will be able to play ice hockey in the Tower. From the picture shown, it appears that players will be playing a life-sized version of the game where they knock around a puck with their bodies in the Tower Hangar. Paradis then mentioned that, like the Tower, The Farm social space will also be getting a makeover for The Dawning, including snow forts for players to hide in during snowball fights.
In addition to the changes inside the social spaces, Bungie said that the studio would extend the snowball throwing mechanic into the wider game itself. While vague, the developers spoke in terms of strikes and other PvE activities where players will be able to throw snowballs at enemies.
In addition to those activities being a part of The Dawning, Bungie also previewed the armor sets that will be exclusive to the event. No word yet on how players will earn that armor, whether by Bright Engrams or another method while playing the game itself. For Destiny 1, there were ways to earn Dawning treasures just by playing the game, but they were also available for Silver.
The Dawning will debut later in December after what is being called Season 2 begins. Season 2 will bring about sandbox changes and more content for players to tackle and collect, including a refreshed stock that will drop from Bright Engrams.
Destiny 2 is available now for PS4 and Xbox One, and releases on October 24, 2017 for PC.
