Weird Super Mario Odyssey Glitch Lets Players Cheat

One of the more addicting little mini-games in Super Mario Odyssey takes place in New Donk City and sees everyone’s favorite ex-plumber attempting to beat the jump rope high scores of other players around the world. What is usually a test of timing and skill has recently become a farce, however, as Mario-fans everywhere begin to cheat the system by exploiting a weird glitch in the game.

With a relatively easy cheat, players are making Mario’s model hover in the air around the rope, allowing him to remain in the jump rope area for an infinite amount of time and giving the player the chance to score 99,999 on the mini-game’s leaderboards. Managing to reach both 30 and 100 jumps in the challenge will give players access to one of Super Mario Odyssey‘s Power Moons, so the glitch is worth looking into for those who find the jump rope game a little tricky to complete.

To activate the ‘Talkatoo Glitch’ in-game, Mario must stand in front of the Metro Kingdom’s friendly hint-giving bird, jump, and throw Cappy. Right when the hat is about to hit the bird, talk to it, then hold ZL and quickly roll away while taking the camera away from the creature. Next time you look at the bird, the camera is going to freeze in place, meaning that players can walk to the jump rope challenge, perform a ground pound, and look at the Talkatoo.

Mario will now be completely hovering in the air, allowing the protagonist to cheat his way through the jump rope challenge to his heart’s desire. It’s a strange little glitch, and it’s somewhat impressive to consider that it didn’t take long before Super Mario Odyssey‘s dedicated fan-base not only found it but used it to exploit the game in some way.

A similar exploit was recently found in the game’s multiplayer function where players discovered that it was possible for Cappy to kill Mario by having one player take control of the new hat companion and defeat his mustachioed friend in battle. Once this glitch is performed, Cappy remains helpless in the place where Mario was slain, tragically unable to collect even a single Power Moon.

Super Mario Odyssey is out now, exclusively for Nintendo Switch.
