Super Mario Odyssey Can Be Beat Without 'Jumping'

As if it needed to be said, Super Mario Odyssey is a smash hit for Nintendo, as the game’s sales have made it the fastest-selling entry in the Mario series in the United States thus far, and players are still exploring the title to find all of its quirky and wonderful secrets. Speaking of which, the YouTuber known as Gamechamp3000 recently discovered that fans can technically beat the game without jumping.

Before other Super Mario Odyssey fans attempt to take on the seemingly impossible task for themselves, the feat does require a bit of explanation in order to understand how the game will actually let players finish it without registering a jump. As seen in the video below, Gamechamp3000 shows that Odyssey has a jump counter that’s accessible upon completion, so he goes quite deep into the title’s logic to figure out how to make the challenge work. Eventually, the YouTuber finds a fine line between what counts as a jump to the game and what doesn’t.

According to Super Mario Odyssey‘s logic and Gamechamp3000’s thorough analysis of the title’s mechanics, as long as players don’t perform a jump while standing at ground level, the game can technically be beaten without a jump being counted. Essentially, the only actions that are noted as jumps are Mario’s single jumps, double jumps, triple jumps, backflips, sideflips, long jumps, ground pound jumps, jumping at the surface of water, and 2D jumps. Every instance that uses the “Y” button is allowed, in addition to wall jumps, jumping off of poles, and swimming upward.

Bearing all of this in mind, beating Super Mario Odyssey without jumping definitely doesn’t appear to be a simple task, especially since it’s one of the most useful abilities in Mario’s entire repertoire of actions. Nevertheless, Gamechamp3000 does a great job of breaking down exactly how fans can accomplish completing the game under such self-imposed constraints, while also sharing some illuminating tidbits about how the title is constructed. Obviously, though, finishing the game by indiscriminately jumping is the best way to go if one wants to beat it in a reasonable amount of time.

Super Mario Odyssey is available now for Nintendo Switch.
