Left 4 Dead 3 Teaser Posted by Valve Dev Fake

Left 4 Dead 3 Teaser Posted by Valve Dev Fake

Rumors once again swirled regarding Left 4 Dead 3 after a teaser image hinting at the sequel was shared via what appeared to be a Valve developer Facebook account. If that sounds like a dubious way for Valve to release a teaser for an unannounced Valve game, that’s because it is. As exciting as the new Left 4 Dead 3 rumors may be, this one’s about as unreliable as they come.

Within the past 24 hours, a Facebook profile featuring Valve developer Ted Carson’s name had its banner updated to a supposed Left 4 Dead 3 teaser. The image itself is a spin on the classic four-fingered zombie hand from Left 4 Dead, only with its pinkie finger removed so only three fingers remain.

The Facebook update may never have even been discovered, except for the official Left 4 Dead website’s social media link changing to point to the profile. That link, coming from a confirmed official source, gave this rumor more weight than it deserved, however, as it now appears that Valve’s website was hacked to some degree.

Left 4 Dead 3 Facebook Rumor - Card Game

Clues pointing to this rumor being false started with the Facebook profile itself. Ted’s profile was listed as female, for instance. It was also registered with an unrelated Gmail address, pointing towards it being faked. The image itself fails further scrutiny too, as it appears to be an edit of a screenshot from the original Left 4 Dead, just cutting off the pinkie. It’s a persuasive edit, but not something Valve would likely rely on.

The final nail in the coffin for this rumor is an update that’s come in the last hour. The Facebook page in question posted a new edit featuring the Left 4 Dead zombie hand holding a card with the text “The Left 4 Dead Card Game.” Clearly, someone’s having a lot of fun with all of the attention.

Consider this rumor squashed, though the issue of how the official Left 4 Dead website ended up pointing to this Facebook profile is still unclear. Whether Left 4 Dead 3 exists unrelated to this rumor is another matter entirely. For any news on that, we’re at the mercy of Valve Time.

Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 are available now on PC and Xbox 360.
